Organic matter removal for continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry analysis of carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of calcite or dolomite in organic‐rich samples

چکیده
δ13C and δ18O values of carbonate in organic-rich samples such as soils, biofilms, lake sediments have been scarcely used so far paleo-environmental, biomineralization, or diagenetic studies because organic matter high proportions is suspected to alter isotope analysis. Yet, with the improvement analytical capabilities particular use CF-IRMS, this may not be an issue anymore. To evaluate this, calcite dolomite mixed various yeast (used here a model for immature matter) were measured. The results indicate that measurements by CF-IRMS require removal only when its weight proportion exceeds carbonates. Yeast generated unidentified molecule during phosphoric acid digestion at 25°C (none 80°C), which shifted higher than 50%. It also CO2, but noticeable shift 80°C 25°C) 75%. Three methods tested: well-established NaOCl H2O2 wet treatments well low temperature plasma ashing (LTA) seldom examined. LTA removed shifts, although imperfectly 95%, without dissolution. efficiently shifts all cases dissolved part dolomite. treatment caused severe dissolution while worsening should thus avoided.

Continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry method for carbon and hydrogen isotope measurements on atmospheric methane
We describe a continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (CF-IRMS) technique for high-precision δD and δ13C measurements of atmospheric methane on 40 mL air samples. CH4 is separated from other air components by utilizing purely physical processes based on temperature, time and mechanical valve switching. Chemical agents are avoided. Trace amounts of interfering compounds can be separated ...
متن کاملSulfur isotope analysis of sulfide and sulfate minerals by continuous flow-isotope ratio mass spectrometry.
A continuous flow method (CF-IRMS) for the rapid determination of the sulfur isotope composition of sulfide and sulfate minerals has significant advantages over the classic extraction method in terms of the reduced sample quantity and a rapid analytical cycle of less than 8 min/ analysis. For optimum performance, the technique is sensitive to a number of operating parameters, including sample w...
متن کاملAn analytical system for stable isotope analysis on carbon monoxide using continuous-flow isotope-ratio mass spectrometry
A fully automated system for the determination of δC and δO in atmospheric CO has been developed. CO is extracted from an air sample and converted into carbon dioxide (CO2) using the Schütze reagent. The isotopic composition is determined with an isotope-ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) technique. The entire system is continuously flushed with high-purity helium (He), the carrier gas. The blank s...
متن کاملOxygen Isotope Fractionation between Coexisting Calcite and Dolomite.
The oxygen isotopic composition of calcite from carbonate rocks of the lower unit of the Flagstaff formation (Paleocene) exposed along the western margin of the Wasatch Plateau, Utah, is about 7 per mil lower than that of coexisting dolomite, suggesting that isotopic equilibration of these two minerals can occur at relatively low temperatures. Unlike recent isotopic evidence presented by Degens...
متن کاملIsotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry.
Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) is a specialized technique used to provide information about the geographic, chemical, and biological origins of substances. The ability to determine the source of an organic substance stems from the relative isotopic abundances of the elements which comprise the material. Because the isotope ratios of elements such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and...
